Emergency Response and Investigation
President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official trip in Saudi Arabia, ordered an immediate emergency response. Images shared on local media showed ambulances and families waiting for updates by the roadside.
A full investigation is underway to determine whether safety violations, engine failure, or weather-related factors caused the disaster.
Why This Matters
Indonesia, a vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands, frequently experiences marine accidents. Safety enforcement remains inconsistent, particularly on heavily used local routes like the one between Ketapang Port and Gilimanuk.
“This is one of Indonesia’s busiest ferry corridors, vital for locals and tourists,” noted a maritime safety official.
In March, another fatal incident off Bali claimed the life of an Australian tourist, underlining the urgent need for improved maritime safety standards.
