Portuguese star’s Lamborghini burst into flames after tyre blowout; brother also killed
Spanish police have confirmed that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota was likely speeding before the deadly crash that claimed his life and that of his brother, André Silva, last Thursday on a motorway in Zamora province.
The 28-year-old footballer, fresh off his wedding just 11 days earlier, was reportedly driving a Lamborghini en route to Santander, where he was expected to rejoin Liverpool FC for pre-season training.
“All the evidence indicates that Diogo Jota was the driver, and the speed was above the legal limit,” said Zamora’s local traffic police.
Crash caused by suspected tyre blowout
Spain’s Guardia Civil said the crash occurred while the car was overtaking on the A52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria, when it suffered a suspected tyre blowout. The vehicle then left the road and burst into flames, leaving both brothers dead at the scene.
Police say tyre marks were detected some 100 meters from the point of impact. Despite early suggestions of poor road conditions, authorities clarified that the road was not a blackspot and could be driven safely even at higher speeds.
Investigation ongoing despite fire damage
The high-intensity fire almost completely destroyed the Lamborghini, making the investigation more complex. Still, forensic experts are compiling a report for judicial authorities.
Jota’s death came shortly after his marriage to Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. The tragic accident has deeply affected the football world, with tributes pouring in from teammates, fans, and the broader football community.
Funeral held in Gondomar
The brothers’ funeral took place over the weekend in Gondomar, their hometown near Porto, Portugal. The event drew large crowds, highlighting Jota’s status as one of Portugal’s beloved sporting figures.
